Dry Ice Production on Video – from Liquid CO2 to Pellets

How does liquid CO2 become solid dry ice? In this video, you can watch a Südstrahl dry ice pelletizer in operation, from the moment the CO2 flows in to the finished pellets dropping straight into the collection box.

What Happens in the Video – the Process in 4 Steps

  1. Liquid CO2 flows in: The pelletizer is supplied from a liquid CO2 tank.
  2. Expansion into dry ice snow: Inside the chamber, the CO2 is suddenly expanded to atmospheric pressure. It cools to -78.5 and turns into dry ice snow.
  3. Compressing and extruding: A hydraulic piston presses the snow through a die plate into solid strands.
  4. Finished pellets: The strands break off into pellets, with a diameter of 16 mm, 3 mm or 1.7 mm depending on the die.

Producing 1 kg of dry ice takes around 2.2 kg of liquid CO2.

Why Produce Your Own Dry Ice?

Dry ice continuously loses mass through sublimation during transport and storage. Producing your own means you always have fresh, high-density pellets. That improves cleaning performance in dry ice blasting and lowers your cost per kilo. You also become independent of suppliers and delivery times.

Our Dry Ice Pelletizers

Both models are PLC-controlled, housed in stainless steel and manufactured in Germany. You’ll find all details and requirements on our dry ice production page.
